It’s All About The Slime!
This month we’re going to show you just some of the fun you can have playing with icky sticky, gooey slime. We simply LOVE slime here at Mess Around! Both kids and adults alike enjoy playing with slime at our Messy Play Sessions, and it’s so easy and fun for you to make at home!
Let’s start with some yummy chocolatey edible slime for the little ones…
MESS AROUND EDIBLE CHOCOLATE SLIME!
Yes, I said chocolate! This is the perfect slime recipe for littluns who still like to put everything in their mouth. They can have great fun playing with the slime, and you can sit back and relax in the knowledge that it’s perfectly safe if they put their little fingers into their mouth while enjoying the gooey, messy play.
WHAT WILL YOU NEED
All you need to make this delectable chocolate slime recipe is 3 things:
- A can of condensed milk
- 3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup
- Cornflour
That’s it! Oh – and a saucepan!
Now this is a job for the grown-ups: Mix the condensed milk with the chocolate syrup and ¼ cup of cornflour in a pan and warm it through over medium-low heat. Keep stirring the mixture as it comes to the boil and thickens up.
Once thickened, remove the pan from the heat, sprinkle the work surface with a little cornflour and then pour the chocolate slime onto the surface and leave it to cool down.
Once cool, knead the slime in the cornflour for a few minutes. It should be quite thin and sticky, but if you want to make it a little thicker just knead in a little more cornflour until you achieve the texture you desire.
How easy was that? And it smells like chocolate heaven too – bonus! You could even add some chocolate chips or mini marshmallows to add texture to the slime.
TIME TO PLAY
Now your little one can enjoy hours of sensory play! Once the chocolate slime is ready, let your little one mix and knead the slimy, sticky mixture with their fingers. Get them to pull the slime about with their small hands and explore how it feels as it stretches and gloops and plops. They will love smearing it all over their face and up their arms too! This is such a fun sensory play activity which will heighten their sense of smell, taste and touch.
Top tip: Once your littlun has finished playing, you can store the chocolate slime in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days.
MESS AROUND SLIME
Now for our classic Mess Around gooey slime recipe that we use all year round in our Messy Play Sessions. It’s such a hit with kids (and grown-ups) of all ages, and it’s really easy for you to make for messy play at home.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
All you need to make this super messy gooey slime recipe is:
- 1 bar of soap
- A grater
- Boiling hot water
- A whisk
- Food colouring
Yes that’s it, super simple right? Oh – and you’ll need a mixing bowl too. A washing up bowl would be perfect!

MESS AROUND BIG KID SLIME
If you have older kids at home who want to join in with the slimy fun they will love this colourful Easter slime recipe! We’ve made it in pink and clear but they can experiment and make it in all different colours. It’s simply awesome!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
You can make this easy Easter slime recipe in just a few minutes. All you need is:
- 1 cup of PVA glue if you’re making normal slime. If you want to make clear slime you will need 1 cup of clear PVA glue
- 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
- 2 tablespoons of contact lens solution *
- Confetti glitter
Oh – and you’ll need a mixing bowl too!
* Make sure the contact lens solution that you use has borax (or boric acid) in it, or the slime won’t work! We used Bausch and Lomb.
Just mix the PVA glue, bicarbonate of soda and contact lens solution in a bowl until it forms a sticky paste, then sprinkle on LOTS of confetti glitter and give it another mix – be generous with the glitter – the more sparkly, the better! Once the confetti glitter is mixed right through, pick it up and knead it in your hands. At first, it will be super sticky but just keep kneading it, and after a while, it will turn into a flexible, stretchy, super-elastic and sparkly slime.
Top tip: If your slime is too sticky to play with just add a little more contact lens solution and mix and then knead it again.
We added food colouring to ours to make it a gorgeous pink. You can experiment with different colours, make it with or without the glitter, and try adding other things to it too. You could make it black with silver sparkly stars, or how about green for mucus-y-looking slime. The possibilities are endless.
TIME TO PLAY
Now it’s time to play! Encourage your kids to stretch it as far as they can until it breaks, roll it into a long sausage, squeeze it until it’s as flat as a pancake, pull it and twist it, prod it and poke it with their fingers…. It’s so flexible and elastic they can have so much messy fun with it for hours!
